The Planet Project

This is a yearlong project that will be worked on in segments, at school.

In 2001 I (Mr. Muth) attended the most exciting conference!  For years I had been looking for a way to tie my science classes together with a central theme.  I have finally found it.  The students will be creating their own planets!
We will be utilizing the web site of Professor Liau of California State University, Los Angeles. This planet building will afford us the opportunity to hit upon every strand of the 7th Grade Science Standards of California. The project will be completed entirely at school, in the computer labs.  We will study an aspect of science, then the students will create that segment in a Power Point presentation (for example, we begin the year studying light and astronomy, we begin the project by choosing a star for our Solar Systems).  This will not only be a lot of fun, but very educational and interesting.

Here are the topics we will be studying followed by the Power Point presentations we will create.

Astronomy and Light - Star, Planet, and Solar System
Geology - Maps and Continents
Bacteria - First Prokaryotes
Cells - First Eukaryotes
Plants - First Plants (water)
Heredity -
Evolution - First Consumers (water)
Plants revisited - First Plants (land)
Invertebrates - First Consumers (land)
Vertebrates - Complex creatures and plants
Ecology - Biomes
